     RE: Need to Decertify PAPERLESS Voting
  ====================================================
  If we act TODAY, by simply writing letters, it is possible
  that California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley will
  take the critical step of decertifying PAPERLESS,
  electronic voting systems in California and prevent them
  from being used this November.

  Please eMail Michael Wagaman, who is compiling the letters:
      mwagaman@ss.ca.gov
  He needs to receive the letters NO LATER THAN TUESDAY at 5 PM

  Here are comments from Kim Alexander, President of
  California Voter:

There is a very good possibility that California Secretary of State Kevin Shelley will decertify paperless, electronic voting systems in California and prevent them from being used this November. The call for decertification arose in California following widespread disenfranchisment of thousands of California voters in the March 2, 2004 election due to technical problems with electronic voting systems. In Alameda county, problems with Diebold smart card encoders impacted one-fourth of the county's polling places; in San Diego county, encoder problems impacted nearly 40 percent of the county's pollling places. In Orange county, thousands of voters were given the wrong electronic ballots; many were unable to cast votes in contests for which they were eligible, while others were allowed to vote in districts in which they did not reside. It is crucial that Secretary Shelley hear from lots of people encouraging him to decertify electronic voting systems. On April 21 and 22, the Secretary of State's Voting Systems and Procedures Panel will take public testimony and decide either then, or shortly after the hearing, whether paperless electronic voting machines will be prohibited in California this November. It is imperative that Secretary Shelley hear from concerned voters who support decertification before April 21. Please take a moment to communicate your concerns with Secretary Shelley and urge decertification. PLEASE send a statement to: Kevin Shelley, California Secretary of State c/o Voting Systems and Procedures Panel Michael Wagaman mwagaman@ss.ca.gov Send the statement no later than 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, in order to have it included in the Panel's information packet.
